Welcome to The Eden Valley
Section of the CTC (we call ourselves EVCTC) caters primarily
for cyclists in Cumbria's Eden Valley which comprises Penrith,
Appleby and Kirkby Stephen, but also includes many out of area
riders from Carlisle, Cockermouth, Barnard Castle and the Scottish
borders. We ride every Wednesday and Sunday. That's over 100
possible rides a year! Wednesdays are most popular attracting
between 8 to occasionally over 20 riders, Sundays are slightly
less popular attracting perhaps 6 to 12.
At present EVCTC has some 60 paid up
members and this is growing every year. We are linked to
the Lancaster and Cumbria District Association (DA) of the
CTC.

Our rides vary in length, hilliness and to a minor
extent pace, but in general will be 40 to 70 miles in the summer
months (plus our annual 100 miler), less in winter. To get a better
idea, please browse our quarterly Runs List which can be accessed
from this website or by requesting a copy from one of the committee.
The majority of rides are on-road, but we also put
on one or two off-road rides a month, usually with an alternative
on-road for that day.
A
few members also enjoy walking on the Lakeland fells, so
if that interests you, please see our separate Walks List events.
Each year we are also likely to have at least a couple
of YHA or campsite based week long stays or moving-on tours. In smaller
groups, members have toured extensively since the section was formed,
often overseas utilising the CTC European Bike Bus. A
cycling holiday story
We have hosted a Tri Vet event at which fifty riders from countrywide enjoyed
100 miles of Cumbrian lanes. Section members regularly attend the CTC York
Rally and have won attendance / distance awards such as the Oppie Shield and
Brooks Trophy.
Social events such as our Christmas Lunch, "Cabaret" Evening and
Saddlebag Sale are held annually, together with occasional walks when winter
road conditions make cycling unsafe.
Several of our members give financial and practical help to the Eden Cycling
Campaign group amongst others, and we also interface with and support other
organisations such as Sustrans and the YHA, especially Dufton with which we
have a happy and fruitful long term association.
If you would like to experience what our successful
section has to offer, we look forward to meeting you on one of our
rides. Simply make contact initially with a member of the committee
or the person who is shown on the Runs List as leading your chosen
ride.
