Busy end to term at Shap School.

Pupils of Shap School have had a busy end to the summer term; the Sports Day held on a very hot day saw many spectators cheering on the children who all performed very well.
A new sports trophy in memory of Squadron Leader Mike Andrews has been presented to school by his family. Sqn Ldr Andrews died in the air crash at the north end of the village in 1999, and as he had been a keen sportsman whilst at school this sports trophy is an appropriate memorial to him. The first winner of the trophy was Michael Miller.
The swimming gala was held at Shap Open Air Swimming Pool on a cooler day and saw everyone taking part; with lots of support and encouragement from parents and friends. Head teacher Lois Whittaker thanked the Pool Committee for providing and excellent facility during term, to Margaret Mossman for helping teach the children to swim and organising the gala, and Ryan Nobbs for acting as lifeguard during lessons and the gala. . The cup was won for a second year by the green team and the Ronnie Richardson Memorial Cup for outstanding achievement was won by Caitlin Hutchinson; the trophies were presented by Chloe Wilcox, who is a National Water Polo player and part of Team GB.
The Leaver's Service was held in St Michael's church where everyone was welcomed by Revd Martin Dew; the act of worship was led by Mrs Whittaker. There were many memories and reminiscences from Year 5 pupils as they wished their Year 6 class mates well in their future at secondary school. The six pupils who are moving on to Ullswater Community College then spoke about their memories, friendships and things they would miss about Shap School.
Prizes of books for Attainment, Progress and Positive Attitude were presented pupils from each year by Chairman of Governors, Elizabeth Grose; and certificates for good attendance were presented by Mrs Whittaker. In his talk, Mr Dew said that positive attitude was the key to success in life, and advised the leavers to treat everyone as they would wish to be treated themselves.
At the end of the service, during the singing of 'One more step along the world I go', the six leavers with their teacher Mrs White progressed around the church before lining up at the door to bid farewell to everyone as they left the service.
