I wonder if anyone can help me?
I am trying to find the present location of the following memorial which was transcribed in 'Westmorland Church Notes' published by Edward Bellasis in 1888.
'In affectionate remembrance of Robert Noble Wilkinson of Sleddale aged 15 years and George Ashworth of Manchester aged 18 years who were drowned whilst bathing in Lake Haweswater, July 10th 1874. A suddenchange; we in a moment fewll, we had not time to bid our friends farewell, it is nothing strange, death happens unto all, it was our lot that day; tomorrow you may fall'
My name is Sallie Ashworth and, I believe, my Great Grandparents Charles Ashworth and Ruth Wilkinson were the sister and brother of the two young men remembered in this inscription.
Thank you
Sallie Ashworth
Hello Sallie
Firstly, you are right Charles Ashworth and Ruth Wilkinson were the sister and brother of George Ashworth and Robert Noble Wilkinson. Charles Ashworth and Ruth Wilkinson are also my Great Grandparents and I have visited the memorial slab with my father, the late John Ashworth, a cousin of your late father, Peter. My Grandpa was Norman Ashworth, yours would be Arthur, born 1891. I know a family member who intends visiting the memorial slab next week (January 2012) so I'll get exact details from him to pass on to you. I have photocpies of a newpaper article, a press release and a letter to my father about the memorial stone which you can have copies of. Helen Ashworth
Hello! I am doing genealogy research of my mother's family (Holmes) to surprise her for her 80th birthday in June. I have been able to find information indicating that we are related to Hugh Holme, who was known as The King of Mardale. I have found some fascinating stories about how he came to Mardale. I also understand the last male Holme (Hugh Parker Holme of Chapel Hill) died in the mid-1800s there. I would love any information and/or pictures you have about the Holme(s) family from Mardale.
Thank you so much! - Kathy Finigan
