We get many requests from visitors to the site who are looking for information about the area or family history. We are happy to help, here are a few of the requests we have had recently:

I am researching my Clifford family ancestry and find it recorded that two important members of that family are noted as having been buried at Shap Abbey.

If it wouldn't be too much trouble, I wonder if you could tell me if there are burials places for either of these persons still at Shap Abbey (which I understand is ruins) or if there is nothing in existence that records their burials in your area:

Sir Robert de Clifford died: 20 May 1344

Sir Roger de Clifford died: 13 July 1389

And anything known about the Clifford family in your area would be appreciated.

"We are tracing my wifes family history which is the [salkeld] family, it has led us to shap.The 1901 census has led us to the crown hotel in shap,that was run by James Ireland and his wife Frances Grace Ireland,ex wife of Robert Salkeld, Frances Grace was a Castley before she married Robert Salkeld. we cannot seem to locate the crown hotel, and we were wondering if it has been demolished or had its name changed. we would be grateful for any information"

As I live in Western Australia, I'm not able to phone the ladies mentioned (Jean Jackson and Liz Amos) and thought I might e-mail them instead. "I have just visited your website and noted the 'Story of Mardale exhibition'. I am in the process of writing a curriculum pack for KS3 schools and am including a section on Mardale. I wonder if you could provide me with images of Mardale before the valley was flooded to include in the pack. I would also be interested in any accounts from people at the time of the proposed flooding - either for or against.
Any assistance in this would be very much appreciated and of course fully acknowledged."

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who knows anything about the
Noddle family that lived in Shap in the early 20th Century. John William
Noddle my great great uncle was a railway signalman, and lived at 11 Church
Street, Shap, with his wife Mary (nee Kirkpatrick). They had at least two
children; Mary Isabella (b1909) and John Raymond (b1918). John William was
originally from Caldbeck.
