Harvest

Harvest celebrations in Shap began on Friday when pupils from Shap Primary School gathered in St. Michael's church for their own service, where were joined by many parents and friends.  Their theme was being thankful for the food we eat and the foods that are healthy.  A presentation called 'The Eat Well Plate', described each food group whilst examples were carried to the front of church. Pupils sang several lively songs all on a harvest theme.  Kavan Lightburn read a passage from Psalm 104 and Molly Woof then led the prayers. Revd Martin Dew gave a brief talk about harvest and its origins, and how it is good to give thanks; The proceeds of the collection are to be shared between Great North Air Ambulance and Macmillan Cancer Support.

On Saturday evening a Harvest meal was served in the Memorial Hall; thirty diners enjoyed a three course meal prepared by women from church, and took part in a harvest quiz between courses, a raffle was held and the evening raised £360.

On Sunday morning members of the Methodist church joined the congregation at St Michael's for harvest worship.  Everyone was welcomed by Revd Martin Dew who said that it was not only harvest but also 'back to church Sunday'. He then consecrated a home communion set given in memory of Flora Fishwick who was a churchwarden for many years.

The service was lay led and the organist was Stephen Mott, and during the first hymn, baskets for produce were carried to the altar.  The worship was led by Jean Jackson. Passages from the Bible were read by Phyllis Brown and Janet Wood; prayers were led by Sheila Parsons.

At the end of worship refreshments were served and the produce was offered for sale.  The harvest donations ware to be sent to the Pakistan Flood Appeal.
