The contemporary craft tour ‘Knit 2gether’ visited Shap over three days. The exhibition was staged in the Memorial Hall, with visitors walking under a lace effect hanging knitted from paper. There was knitting on giant knitting needles and some intriguing displays including light and dainty shoe forms, light-boxes and small sampler type squares depicting events in a person’s life.
One display attracting a lot of interest was Table Talk, a table and chairs made from knitting reinforced with plastic piping. Young and old alike could not resist the temptation to sit down and add to the French knitting on a giant bobbin with nails.
The exhibition demonstrated how knitting can be a modern art form as well as a practical craft for making garments. The exhibition was part of Highlights Productions.
