The bells rang to welcome worshippers as they gathered in St Michael's church, Shap to celebrate Mothering Sunday.
The service was led by Jean Jackson who welcomed everyone then invited Caitlin Hutchinson, Abigail and Sam Westhorpe to describe some of the things mothers do.
During the first hymn, the Mothers Union banner was carried to the altar by Elsie Davidson, followed by children carrying baskets containing posies of flowers.
A passage about mothers by John Killinger was read by Elaine Allison, and the prayer of thanksgiving was led by Molly Woof and Keeley Hutchinson. The organist throughout was Janet Wood.
Two bible readings about mothers of special children, the story of Samuel's mother dedicating her son to the temple was read by Phyllis Brown, and the story of Mary and Joseph finding the boy Jesus in the Temple was read by Pauline Harron. A special Mothering Sunday hymn written by a member of the congregation was sung.
Sandra Ward of Orton who is working towards ordination gave the address; in it she said how important it is for mothers to pray for their children and to trust God's plan for them.
Prayers were led by Sheila Parsons, and the flowers were dedicated before being distributed, then Sarah Lightburn and Ellis Grabarz and Elysia and Gabriella Jackson took the baskets around the church to ensure everyone received a posy.
