There was a distinctly South American atmosphere in Shap Memorial Hall when Salsa Theatre Productions performed ‘Latintastic’. Unfortunately the evening attracted a small turn-out; however those who made the effort were rewarded by a performance that was both lively and amusing. Tanya Cusan Espinosa and her brother Sergio performed South American dances both solo and with the use of life-size puppet ‘Valentino’ and two horse puppets. The vibrant rhythms made feet tap whilst the colourful costumes were reminiscent of carnival time.
Tanya and Sergio are natives of Columbia and are now based in Leeds where they run successful Salsa dance classes as well are touring with the show. It was clear from their performance that they have a real passion for their native dance styles.
Following the cabaret, the audience were invited to take the floor for instruction in Salsa; Tanya and Sergio were joined by one of their advanced students Helen Taylor, who had been in charge of the music for the cabaret. After some hesitance the audience got to grips with the rhythm and steps, as they gradually relaxed under the friendly encouragement of their instructors.
This was a most enjoyable evening that could only have been improved upon by a larger attendance. The performance formed part of Highlights Rural Touring Scheme programme, and was hosted by Shap CDC who held a raffle and served refreshments.
