Shap Flower Show. Held Mon. 27 th August 2007.

The annual Shap Flower Show organised by St. Michael’s church was held in the Memorial Hall on Monday. Entries were little down overall on last year; this may have been due in some part to the decision to hold the event on Bank Holiday Monday instead of the Saturday. The entries in the flower and vegetable classes were reasonable given the poor summer weather. Floral Art classes were worst hit, with most sections only attracting a single entry. The number of entries in the children’s’ classes was good and these were boosted by a section for work done at St. Michael’s Holiday club.

Trophies were awarded as follows: The John Fishwick Memorial Trophy for best exhibit in show-Anna Dutson for a hooked rag rug hanging of a Peacock butterfly; this entry also was awarded the Mary Harrison cup for the best in the handicraft section, the Armstrong Cup for best in baking section – Elaine Allison for a decorated chocolate cake; the Ada Ronald cup for best in Floral Art – Janet Wood for her arrangement entitled ‘Enchanted Kingdom’. The award for the most points in the adult classes went to Elaine Allison with 49 points, the runner up was Jean Scott-Smith with 37 points, and Keeley Hutchinson gained the most points in the childrens’ classes with 21 points with the runner up being her sister Caitlin with 16 points.

At the end of the show, produce was auctioned by Revd Carole Marsden and the raffle was drawn.

Finally, Mrs Marsden presented the trophies to the winners. The judges were as follows: Flowers, pot plants and Floral Art: Audrey Douglas, Vegetables: Richard Longstaffe; Baking and Preserves: Joan Raine and Frances Allen, Handicrafts: Jean Scott-Smith, Photography: John Falshaw, Children’s classes: Gill Longstaffe. .
