Shap’s Special Sunday
A variety of events were held in Shap on Sunday, in the past this
would have been the Rose Fete weekend, and so an effort was made
to hold a community day. This began with a village service in the
Memorial hall, Revd Carole Marsden gave the welcome, and the organist
for singing was Chizzer Childs. A Bible lesson was red by John
Bayliffe. Rev Michael Holland gave a talk based on tennis and he
produced two rackets and invited two children to hit a ball to
one another. He then talked about how people attending a coaching
school reacted in different ways to what they were being taught,
they either did not listen, or got fed up, or stopped attending,
but there was one group, not the most talented, but keen players
who improved their game and who encouraged others to participate
in the sport. During prayers, everyone was given a pipe cleaner
to fashion into something they wished to pray for. At the end of
the service, children from the Sunday Club received book prizes.
A collection was taken which is to be donated to the Eden Valley
Children’s Hospice.
The day continued with lunches and snacks being served in the hall,
and stalls, competitions, raffle and Tombola outside in the sunshine.
The Heritage Centre was open for the History Society exhibition
and there was a heritage walk led by Jean Scott-Smith during the
afternoon. The route took in prehistoric stones, and many old buildings
including the church.
All in all, the event was not very well attended, and there were
fewer stalls than had been hoped, but those who did make the effort
enjoyed what was on offer. The profits from the day were for Church
Funds.
