School’s Olympic recognition
- 17-4-2012
- Categorized in: Shap News
Pupils and teachers at Shap Endowed Primary school held a special assembly to mark then being officially welcomed to London 2012’s get Set network in recognition of their commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic values.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic games has awarded the school a plaque and certificate to acknowledge its involvement in the London 2012 education program. This extends beyond PE and sport, inspiring pupils to get involved and make a difference. Shap Primary now joins schools and colleges across the UK as members of the Get Set network, receiving access to exclusive competitions and 2012 Games-related opportunities.
Chloe Wilcox of Reagill near Shap, a member of the GB Olympic water polo squad, came fresh from competing in Holland to present the certificate to the school. She told the children about her sport and the training she undertakes each week, and encouraged them to aspire to represent their country in a sport of their choice.
There was a message from Sebastian Coe welcoming Shap Primary School to the Get Set network.
Shap School has always valued Sport for All and is very excited about its involvement in London 2012.
The school are planning a whole half term devoted to the Olympics with many special events, including their own games. They are also going to see the Olympic torch pass through Appleby and meet a young Olympic torch bearer.
They will be having a special speaker, Alan bell to talk about being chief starter of the athletics events, and the school is in the early stages of arranging for their street and dance groups to be part of the celebrations in Manchester

Hi,
I'll be proud to represent Shap by carrying the Olympic torch through Appleby on 20 June (see http://www.london2012.com/torch-relay/torchbearers/torchbearers=duncan-vaughan-3956/ ). I look forward to seeing the school there (and sorting photos with the Olympic torch for anyone who would like one!).
I'll also be in The Greyhound with the torch in the evening, for anyone who'd like to have photos taken with it.
Kind regards,
Duncan
