Shap CDC Awards evening 22nd November 2011

Report

Students, tutors, members of Shap School Governing Body and Shap Community Development Centre Advisory Forum attended the CDC Awards evening in Shap School.  Janet Wood, Centre Manager, welcomed everyone and thanked all those who had supported the CDC throughout the 2010/2011 academic year.  She thanked the tutors, whose dedication was key to the success of the centre and she commended all the learners for the commitment they had shown attending longer courses. She reflected that the year had seen some changes regarding the local structure of adult education provision in the Eden area.   The three centres at Shap CDC, Fellside CDC (Langwathby) and Penrith (formerly Ullswater CC Adult Education) have combined to become North Eden Learning. As from January North Eden Learning will have an information desk available in Penrith Library on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.  This should lead to more cohesion in provision locally and greater awareness for learners of alternative opportunities in the area.  Through partnership with Fellside CDC free 1 to 1 UK Online provision for those new to computing is also available at Shap.  Shap CDC also works closely with Appleby Heritage Centre to try and ensure learners in the Upper Eden Valley are aware of provision across our rural region.

Janet Wood then introduced Roger Highton, former Headteacher at Shap school, and who was the main instigator for the development of Shap CDC as part of the Cumbria CREDITS scheme in 1999.  He reflected on the fact that in excess of 70 CDCs were set up originally across Cumbria and only 12 remain and how delighted he was to be able to come back and see the centre at Shap thriving and both the school and community still benefitting from it.  He said the success of Shap CDC was down to the determination of the governors and community members to provide the facility, the continued local demand for courses at the centre, and to the CDC staff responsible for planning the programmes and providing new activities.  He was very impressed by the range of courses on offer and wished the CDC every success in the future.

Learners who had attended the Family Literacy course, and the Move on Maths course (leading to Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications) earlier in the year were congratulated and then Roger Highton presented certificates to those who had gained the BCS IT User Level 2 (ECDL Extra) and the Advanced ECDL Level 3 Spreadsheets qualifications.  Following this tutors, Andrea Hodgson and Patrick Neaves were presented with their Level 4 Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector qualifications.

Headteacher, Lois Whittaker, thanked Roger Highton for making the special journey from Yorkshire to attend the awards ceremony and said how well the school and the CDC worked together.

There lots of courses starting at Shap in the New Year including, ICT qualification courses; Level 1 incorporating Word Processing, Spreadsheets and Using Email and Level 2 incorporating Word Processing, Spreadsheets and Powerpoint.  Other non- qualification courses on offer are Creative Writing, Art classes, Spanish, Introduction to IT, Internet and Email, PC Housekeeping, Garden Design using CAD and the following one day courses; Beaded Jewellery, Indigo Dyed Shibori, Nuno Felt, Family History, Managing Files & Folders and Surfing the Net.
