Shap MUGA
Multi-use Games Area (MUGA) Project
Shap Parish Council has found that funding could be available for a MUGA, and is working on a project to make this happen. This will be sited on the out of use third tennis court. (See pictures above) This development is likely to cost about £80,000.
Current plans include:
A new surface which will be a softer polymeric surface. It will be suitable for both netball and 5-a-side football with line markings for both these sports
Green rebound fencing which will include built-in goals at each end. The fencing will be 3m high except at the road end where it will be 4m high, with 2 entrance gates. There will be cricket stumps and basketball goals.
Floodlighting to allow evening use. This will require planning consent.
A new pathway to provide easy access without entering the tennis courts.
Progress to date
We have received a number of quotes, both from companies who can provide the complete facility, and from specialists in individual sections. We are evaluating these, and have made some visits to see actual examples.
Thank you to everyone who completed and returned the questionnaire. This showed that there is a need for this facility in Shap and a lot of support. It was also helpful to see that the majority supported a small increase in the parish precept, should it be required. Support came from all age groups, but, in particular, older members of the community wanted to show their support for Shap youth, even though it is a facility they might not use.
There will be a public meeting on Monday February 20th at 7.30pm in the Green Room, where we will give a presentation on progress including the overall design, type of fencing, floodlighting, all-weather surface and new pathway.
Sufficient potential funding has been identified to cover the cost for the MUGA, which is going to be around £80,000. The application to Sport England, hopefully our main funder at £50,000, is being sent off in March. The result of this application will not be known until mid-July, so nothing can start before we hear from them.
Do come along to the meeting and hear all about it. We will be happy to answer any questions. A full analysis of the information from the questionnaire will be ready soon. Watch this space!
