The annual Shap Village Show organised by St. Michael's church was held in the Memorial Hall on Saturday and raised over £500 for church funds.
Entries in the Flower and vegetable sections were well down most likely due to the recent poor weather. The Floral Art classes attracted a good number entries all of a high standard. Baking and preserve classes were both down a little on last year with some previously popular classes attracting no entries whilst others only had single entries, but it was encouraging to see some entries from young people. The number of entries in the children's classes were very low; however children's entries were boosted by a section for written work done in school, the judge was so impressed with the standard for these she awarded the best in section rosette to the school collective. There were some new children's classes this year, fancy dress, caged pets and a dog shown by a child; caged pets attracted five entries, but there were only three dogs and sadly, one child in fancy dress.
There was also a new trophy given in memory of Flora Fishwick who died earlier this year and who had always been actively involved with the show from its inception. The Flora Fishwick memorial cup for the best hanging basket was won by Susan Ronald, and was presented for the first time by two of Mrs Fishwick's children Roy Fishwick and Christine Beatham.
Other trophies were awarded as follows: The John Fishwick Memorial Trophy for best exhibit in show - Sandra Irving, the Ada Ronald cup for the best in Floral Art - Maureen Hogg, The Mary Harrison Cup for the best exhibit in Handicrafts - Sandra Irving; the Armstrong Cup for best in baking section - Sylvia Hodgson The award for the most points in the adult classes went to Elaine Allison with 38 points, the runner up was Ernest Hudson with 35 points, and Rosie Dutson gained the most points in the children's classes for the second year running with 12 points.
At the end of the show, Revd Beverley Lock thanked everyone for their hard work and presented trophies to the winners. Produce was auctioned by Edward Hodgson and the raffle was drawn.
